"Hands-on"

Some of the projects which are on-going at present are:-

Census 51 - copying out the (often scribbled) returns of the enumerators in the 1851 census for the Dumfriesshire, Kirkcudbrightshire and Wigtownshire to give details and comprehensive picture of the inhabitants of each parish, and creating computerised indexes by person, place and occupation.

Dean of Guild Plans- identifying and listing the many thousands plans of buildings in Dumfries and Moffat from the late 19th Century onwards and indexing them by date, address, project and architect or builder.

Jail and Bail Bond Books- indexing the 18th Century records of those in prison or out on bail for Dumfries with full details of their crimes and punishments.

Shipping Registry books- the transcribing and indexing the details of all ships registered at the ports of Dumfries, Kirkcudbright, Stranraer, Wigtown and Whithorn from 1824 including their descriptions, masters, owners and past histories.

'Chamberlains' Accounts - creating indexes by person, place and subject from the 18th Century financial records of the Burgh of Dumfries.

Conservation - carrying out gentle basic cleaning and repair on damaged manuscripts and sorting and reboxing them in readiness for professional conservation where appropriate.
